Audi has finally released the first official pictures of its small A1, which is aimed squarely at stylish small cars. Intended to become the biggest-selling model in the firm's history, the A1 is claimed to be the sportiest and most luxurious car in its class. As the pictures reveal, the A1 resembles a shrunken A3, with rounded rear end and familiar family frontal styling. Described by Audi as a "city-friendly three-door premium hatchback", it made its world debut at the Geneva show and go on sale in the UK in May, priced from £13,000.
Audi is continuing the trend towards smaller, turbocharged engines. The A1 will initially come with three powerplants - a 1.2 TFSI petrol producing 85bhp, a 1.4 TFSI petrol with 120bhp and a 1.6 TDI diesel developing 104bhp - all with engine start-stop for improved economy with reduced CO2 emissions. The 1.4 TFSI will take the car to 60mph from a standstill in 9.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 124mph.
The 1.2-litre engine will come with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 1.4 will come with a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an optional seven-speed S-tronic twin-clutch transmission. The diesel engine will have a five-speed manual 'box. Underlining the A1's premium tag will be a high level of standard equipment including alloy wheels, air-conditioning, an MP3-compatible audio system and an ESP stability system.
Buyers will be able to personalise their A1 with numerous options for the exterior and interior, including a palate of colours, materials and equipment. The striking "roof contrast line" – a different colour scheme for the A,B and C pillars – will be one of the options. Depending on the specification – SE, Sport or S-line – the A1 will have 15-, 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels. All versions will have what Audi says is its "power-saving" electrohydraulic power steering.
